Why Having Links to Your Website Are Important

Having links from other websites is very important, yet, it's one of the most overlooked strategies for increasing traffic and for increasing your position in the search engines.

As soon as you launch a website, you should spend some time working on a strategic web site linking strategy.

By working on getting sites to link to you, you'll not only see an increase in traffic, but you'll also see your website achieve better listings in the search engines, especially the most important search engine - Google.

How to find good sites to link to you

It's all about getting the right sites to link to you.  Just remember quality before quantity.  That means to avoid links farms and FFAs like the plague.  Many search engines will penalize you for having a link from a link farm.  Ask yourself: "Would I want people to associate me with this website?"  If the answer is no, then move on to the next site.  With over 40,000,000 websites, you should be able to find some high quality websites willing to link to you.

Before you get started, I recommend these two tools, as they'll make finding the quality sites you want to be linked to much easier.

The first is the Google Toolbar.  With the Google Toolbar, you'll be able to see how important Google thinks the page is.

The second is Alexa Toolbar.  With Alexa, you can see how popular the site is.  Alexa ranks every site based on how often other toolbar users visit the site.  It's an excellent tool, and the best part about both of theses tools are that they're absolutely FREE.

The next step is to get on your favorite search engine (I recommend Google since it's the largest.) and start searching for websites related to yours.  Many good websites will make it very easy for you to contact them.  But if you're having trouble finding contact information, you can always check the who is registration info and try contacting them via the information they used when the domain was registered.

Here are some tips to remember when approaching webmasters for links.

  • Make It Personal
    • Although I recommend you make a template make sure you personalize the email.  Complement the owner on a certain design you like or on an offer you really like.  If you know the person's name, use it.
  • Emphasize the benefits
    • Emphasize the fact that it would be mutually beneficial to trade links.  Remember, look for related websites where it would be beneficial for both sites to have links to each other.
  • Give them a link
    • Before you even contact the webmaster, give them a link on your site (and tell them where they can find it in your email), saying it will become permanent if they link back to you.  If they remove the link, you can always remove theirs.  This will dramatically improve the number of links you will receive as some people will feel obligated to return the favor.
  • Fax or Call
    • If you really want your request to be noticed, try calling or faxing instead of emailing.  Again, you'll see a dramatic increase in responses since people don't typically ignore faxes or phone calls.
  • Send a Reminder
    • If you don't receive a reply in the first week, send a gentle reminder asking them again for a link.  You can even try a third email if you don't receive a response on the second.  However, I don't recommend more than three emails as some webmasters will start viewing your emails as Spam.

We practice what we preach.  Reciprocal linking is one part of many "effective website strategies" Marketing Effects uses to increase traffic to our website and to increase our position in search engines.  I recommend you develop your own strategic web site linking strategy as soon as possible.

Beyond Reciprocal Linking:

After you've acquired a few reciprocal links from related websites, it's probably time to start working on getting some one way links to your website.  One way links are given significantly more weight in helping you get better search engine rankings.

However, getting these one way links can be a long and time consuming process, but rest assured, it is well worth the time.

Getting one way links from others is really all about content.

The first thing you'll want to do is start writing articles related to your website's theme.  Then, start submitting your articles to related sites, or sites that would be interested in your article (for example, look at about.com).  If a site picks up your article, then there will also be a link to your site as well.

Another method that is much faster is to purchase the links.  There are many sites that sell links from their sites.  Cost varies depending on the site and the PR of that site.  If you're interested in purchasing one way text links to your site, then I recommend you go to linkadage.com.   Remember, it's important to have sites that are related to your sites content, and not just any site.  For example, a web hosting site is probably not a good match for a site that offers horse riding lessons.

Also, there are sites out there where they will do the work for you and find link partners for you for $10-50 per link.  We are waiting on the results of some of the provider's we're testing before we recommend a service.

Try these strategies along with your search engine optimization strategy and you'll start to dominate the competition in search engine rankings.
